چکیده

Development of specialty crops and GM products has had a great impact on the grain handling industry during past years. Added costs associated with handling these crops have become an issue of major importance for grain-handlers. For this study, data were collected from a survey of elevators in the Upper Midwest. The information gathered concerned their segregation practices, and the associated time and costs. This study shows the different costs (grading and handling) associated with segregation practices at the grain-handler level. The results obtained by using the empirical model based on the framework by Hurburgh et al. (1994) revealed that the cost of modifying systems to handle GM is of major importance. Assuming no modification is realized, the total cost of segregation is about 10 cents per bushel. The volume of grain tested also has an important impact on the total cost of segregation per bushel. As volumes handled and/or tested increase, the cost of segregation decreases. Finally, the gross elevator margin and the premium for quality seem to be large enough to offset the increase in handling costs due to these new segregation practices. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Co-existence of agricultural production systems.

Strategies and best practices for the co-existence of GM and non-GM crops need to be developed and implemented with the participation of farmers and other stakeholders. According to the principle of 'subsidiarity', decisions should be made by the lowest authority possible. When applying this concept to the case of GM crops, the affected society should determine their use and management in a reg...

Co-existence of genetically modified crops with conventional and organic farming.

What has the co-existence of GM and non-GM crops to do with environmental biosafety? A clear distinction has to be made between the economic aspects of co-existence and the environmental and health aspects of GMOs. Nevertheless, since both the co-existence and the biosafety areas are often based on the same scientific knowledge (e.g. regarding gene flow) and EBR is interested in the socio-econo...

Using simulation models and data mining to study co-existence of GM/non-GM crops at regional level

Genetically-modified (GM) crops increased their share in EU agriculture, so the adventitious presence of GM varieties in non-GM seeds and crops has become an issue and poses the problem of their co-existence with conventional and organic crops. Therefore, there is a need to propose appropriate measures at the farm and regional levels to minimize adventitious presence of GM crops. Outputs from t...

Co-existence of GM and non GM crops: case study of maize grown in Spain

The evidence to date shows that these three types of maize production have co-existed without economic and commercial problems. This includes in regions such as Catalunya where GM (Bt) is concentrated. Where non GM maize has been required in some markets, supplies have been relatively easily obtained, based on market-driven adherence to on/post farm segregation and by the purchase of maize from...

The co-existence between transgenic and non-transgenic maize in the European Union: a focus on pollen flow and cross-fertilization.

The ongoing discussion on the co-existence between genetically modified (GM) and non-GM crops becomes more important in the European Union (EU). With the recent inscription of 17 GM maize varieties in the common EU catalogue of varieties of agricultural plant species, the acreage of transgenic maize for market purposes is expected to increase in some European countries. In the EU, specific tole...
